NOTE: Name removed to prevent embarrassment.

Last Thanksgiving I had the (insert adjective) of listening to a family member opine about stores that are open on holidays. “It’s a shame people have to work on Thanksgiving.”

If only there was a way to resolve this. What could it be? Hmmmm…DON’T SHOP ON THANKSGIVING!!!

If one chooses not to shop on Thanksgiving then there is no demand for Thanksgiving shopping. Stores won’t open. Seems simple enough.

Yet in the most American of follow up statements this family member announced s/he would be making a Thanksgiving evening trip to Target because a $100 gift card was offered with the purchase of an iPad. “That’s too good of a deal.”

Can’t make up this stuff!

For consumers with emotional IQ and a conscience it’s a non-issue. For the self-absorbed consumer who needs a little help doing the right thing the following is a current list of retailers who will NOT be open on Thanksgiving:

American Girl
Barnes & Noble
Bed, Bath and Beyond
Burlington Coat Factory
Costco
Crate & Barrel
Dillard’s
DSW
GameStop
HomeGoods
Home Depot
Jo Ann Fabrics
Lowe’s
Marshalls
Nordstrom
Petco
Pier 1
Publix
RadioShack
Sam’s Club
Sur La Table
T.J. Maxx

Be sure to stop by your local store or send them an e-mail and thank them for putting people before profits even if only for one day.
