The Monday release of the 2012 IRS Data Book provides a look at agency activities from 10/1/11 – 9/30/12.  Information available includes the number of filed returns, amount of taxes collected, enforcement, filing method (paper vs. electronic), taxpayer assistance and IRS budget/workforce among others.

The IRS said it examined less than 1% of all tax returns filed.  However high income taxpayers received more scrutiny.  “Overall, in Fiscal Year 2012, individual income tax returns in higher AGI classes were more likely to be examined than returns in lower AGI classes,” said the IRS.

The IRS examined roughly 12% of the 337,477 tax returns reporting income of $1,000,000+.  About 3% of returns reporting income of $200,000 – $1,000,000 were examined.  Returns reporting income under $200,000 barely received notice – less than 0.4% of these were examined.
