President Obama captivated the nation with his message of Hope. He rode it to victory in the race for The White House.
Unfortunately his Hope has been a failure. Unemployment remains at unpalatable levels, tax hikes are on the way, politically motivated rather than economically relevant policies await the economy and health care, etc.
It’s time for Hope 2.0
We may have been given just that with yesterday’s Republican victory in the Massachusetts race for the senate seat vacated by the passing of Ted Kennedy. The people of Massachusetts spoke for the American people by indicating frustration and disappointment with Obama’s administration.
The traditionally Democratic state voted against Democratic Attorney General Martha Coakley in favor of Republican state Senator Scott Brown. In doing so they put a 41st Republican into the US Senate and, thus, eliminated the “super majority” enjoyed by the Democrats. This means goodbye health care reform, so long card check and sayonara cap and trade.
If Obama’s message of Hope was one of change then our Hope is Obama reads the handwriting on the wall. President Clinton entered office after the ’92 election with an aggressive liberal agenda. The nation said, “Thanks but no thanks” to Hillary-care and other Big Government programs by sweeping out the Democrats in the mid-term elections. This brought us the Republican’s and their Contract with America.
What it really brought us was a gridlocked Executive branch with Congress in the way of everything President Clinton wanted to do. The result was Administration policy that moved from the left to the center. Our nation’s liberal agenda became very much pro-business and pro-common sense. Under Clinton we saw Republican-type policies such as welfare reform and a reduction in the taxation on capital formation.
Yesterday’s elections can be the start of Hope 2.0 if Obama learns from the recent past. If he rejects President Clinton’s example of moving toward the middle then he’s going to have a difficult time when he seeks re-election.
